NEDO Selects Citadel AI for “R&D on Advancing AI Safety”

Citadel AI is pleased to announce that its joint proposal with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and Corpy&Co., Inc. has been selected for the “R&D on Advancing AI Safety” project from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

1. Purpose of the Project

This project will advance research and development aimed at (i) establishing and disseminating AI safety standards and (ii) developing evaluation and management technologies needed to oversee and use generative AI appropriately. The key objectives include:

• Developing evaluation and management technologies that serve as the “benchmarks” for a risk-based safety approach
• Creating and validating assessment methods for everyday living scenarios and building testing environments
• Preparing guidance and other materials to drive international standardization and broader adoption

2. Background

In recent years, while generative AI technology has rapidly advanced, the absence of specific standards and methods for evaluating AI safety and reliability has become a major barrier to widespread corporate adoption of AI technology.

As AI expands into business applications ranging from automobiles, robots, and medical devices to consumer products, falling behind in developing and implementing the “brains” of high-value products pose a risk to Japan’s future competitiveness.

3. Citadel AI’s Role

Within this project, Citadel AI, in collaboration with the AI Safety Institute (AISI), National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), and the AI Quality Management Initiative (AIQMI), will undertake the following research and development activities:

• Organizing AI safety evaluation criteria backed by industry needs and technical effectiveness.
• Creating practical implementation guidelines for businesses that deploy external-facing generative AI applications with high safety and quality requirements.
• Developing and validating metrics for AI safety evaluation to ensure their practical effectiveness.

By accelerating the implementation of safe, reliable, high-quality AI products and services, this project aims to enhance the value and international competitiveness of the Japan brand in AI.
